Rochester Aquatics offers swim lessons and water safety training to Southeast MN in partnership with the SwimAmerica franchise! 

Our fun group lessons are a great way to spend time helping others and earning supplemental income. 

We host programming 6 days of the week with evening and weekend opportunities. Weekend shifts offer time and a half differential!

While our training and certification process allows us to bring on individuals without extensive water experience, a background check through USA Swimming is a requirement for this position.

Year round programming is offered at the Rochester Recreation Center Warm Water Pool.

Beyond the group lesson schedule, we offer private lessons, infant/tot water safety lessons, and a Prep Squad! 
Cross training into these is an option once all levels in the group lesson curriculum are completed.

Job Description:

  • To provide and ensure that the highest quality swimming lessons are provided for all levels of instruction to infants, youth, and adults.
  • Opportunity to instruct both group and private, infant through adult, swimming lessons.
  • Required to set-up and clean-up materials used for instruction.
  • Provide a safe environment and ensure the safety of all class participants. 
  • Provide feedback to class participants and proper instruction in methods of swimming and safety skills.
  • Enforce all pool rules and regulations.
  • Address concerns and emergencies according to policy.
  • Report any problems, concerns, or emergencies that arise during class to authority on duty.
  • Attend staff meetings and in service training as required.
  • Responsible for finding a dependable and appropriate substitute.*
  • Keep all certifications current.  Update to new material as necessary.
  • Minimum 14 years of age.  
  • Previous teaching or lesson instruction experience preferred but not required.
  • Ability to interact and instruct diverse populations.

Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Excellent customer service skills.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense and to understand and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills and Abilities
Must be self-motivated and able to engage with timekeeping and communication apps. Ability to work well with people of all ages and abilities. Ability to provide a positive, fun, and safe lesson experience to class participants.

Uniform Expectations
Instructors should be in swimwear that is well fitting and in good condition. Our program shares the cost of the official swim shirt distributed to each instructor at the time of hire. Instructors will be responsible for $20 for their first swim shirt. Replacements are handled on a case by case basis.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, hear, stand, and walk. They must reach with hands and arms; climb or balance in and out of the pool; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Specific hearing ability to hear distress calls above pool noise. Specific height requirement: able to safely stand in a 4' 6” pool.

Work Environment
Indoor and outdoor pool environments! The employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather elements, and a wide range of temperatures. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, exceeding 80dB(A).
Compensation: $15.00 - $22.50 per hour
