Philosophy at OUAT
Balance, harmony, and quality education for a child is the philosophy of Once Upon a Time Child Care Center (“Once Upon a Time”). Providing a nurturing and safe environment is a given and is the foundation of the center. However, we expand on the traditional approach to child care and focus on creating a stimulating, interactive learning center blending basic theory and environmental curriculums with holistic, stress-relieving life skills. Children learn A, B, C’s and 1, 2, 3’s as well as how to care for themselves, the world we live in and to give back to society. Staff set an example of balance, positive attitude, leadership, and responsibility. Teachers and staff support parents in their role in raising their children.
Children focus on developing academic skills as well as the following characteristics: kindness, compassion, caring, understanding, and respect for others and property. Children work on being polite, learn to acknowledge kindness, avoid competition, help others in need, share skills and talents, and celebrate the diversity of our planet. Teachers and staff strive to show children they can make a difference in the world. Children are appreciated and valued for who they are. In turn, they will develop healthy self-esteem and learn to respect others.
The environment of the Center reinforces the philosophy through an abundance of natural light, natural colors, and large classrooms which encourage interaction and community among children and staff. Fresh and organic food made from scratch keep children healthy. Once Upon a Time is committed to environmental stewardship and socially responsible business practices. Whenever possible, environmentally preferable materials will be used in the building, classrooms, supplies, and play areas to minimize ecological impact and in continuity with the environmental curriculum.

Children need to play and freely express themselves. The Creative Curriculum utilizes hands-on experiences and play. Boundaries and limits allow children to safely explore their worlds. Children look for and need such boundaries. Once known, children have the courage to explore and gain new skills; fostering a positive self-image and healthy social relationships. We strive to help children become successfully independent.
