Position Summary
The RCSU Nurse provides direct nursing care, clinical monitoring, and medication oversight for individuals receiving short-term crisis stabilization services in a Residential Crisis Stabilization Unit (RCSU). This role supports individuals experiencing acute behavioral health crises and works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to promote safety, stabilization, and continuity of care during stays of up to 23 hours.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct nursing assessments upon admission and throughout the individual’s stay
- Monitor physical and behavioral health status and document findings accurately
- Administer medications as ordered and maintain Medication Administration Records (MARs)
- Verify and document all medications brought in by individuals at admission
- Initiate and maintain medication inventory and controlled substance counts (if applicable)
- Respond to medical and psychiatric emergencies in accordance with agency protocols
- Communicate clinical concerns promptly to the Medical Director, Nurse Supervisor, or on-call provider
- Support discharge planning and coordination of follow-up care
- Ensure compliance with DBHDS regulations, agency policies, and nursing standards of practice
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold HIPAA requirements at all times
- Participate in required trainings, staff meetings, and quality improvement activities
Qualifications
Required:
- Active Virginia license as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
- Minimum of 1 year nursing experience (behavioral health, crisis services, emergency, or residential setting preferred)
- Current CPR/BLS certification
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, crisis-oriented environment
- Strong assessment, documentation, and communication skills
Preferred:
- Experience in behavioral health, substance use services, or crisis stabilization programs
- Familiarity with DBHDS regulations and 23-hour crisis models
- Experience with medication inventory and controlled medication procedures
Physical & Work Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and respond quickly in emergency situations
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs as needed
- Must be able to work assigned shifts, including weekends and holidays as required
