Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced PCB Layout Engineer to support the design and release of complex, high-reliability electronic assemblies. This role is responsible for performing advanced PCB layout for high-speed digital and power electronics designs, including multi-lamination cycle boards up to 32 layers, in accordance with IPC-6012 and related industry standards. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, thrives in technically rigorous environments, and collaborates closely with electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing engineers to deliver first-pass-success designs.
Key Responsibilities
Perform complex PCB layout for advanced electronic systems, including:
- Up to 24-layer PCBs
- Multi-lamination fabrication stackups
- High-speed digital interfaces and mixed-signal designs
- Power electronics and power distribution networks
- Translate schematics, stackups, and design constraints into manufacturable PCB layouts
- Apply IPC-6012, IPC-2221/2222, and internal design rules throughout layout activities, including an understanding of fabricator coupon construction and testing
- Execute controlled impedance routing, length matching, differential pair routing, and via optimization
- Collaborate with electrical engineers on:
- Signal Integrity (SI)
- Power Integrity (PI)
- EMI/EMC considerations
Work closely with mechanical engineering to ensure proper component placement, keep-outs, and enclosure integration
Support DFM/DFA reviews with fabrication and assembly partners
Generate and release complete PCB manufacturing packages, including:
- Fabrication notes
- Assembly drawings
- Stackup documentation
- Gerbers / ODB++ / IPC-2581, etc.
Participate in design reviews and provide layout-specific risk assessments
Support board bring-up and debug activities as needed
Required Qualifications
8+ years of professional PCB layout experience on complex designs
Demonstrated experience with:
- High layer count PCB layouts (e.g. 16 layers and higher)
- Multi-lamination cycle designs
- High-speed digital interfaces (e.g., DDR, SerDes, high-speed clocks, high-speed buses)
- Power electronics and PDN design considerations
Strong working knowledge of IPC-6012 and related IPC standards
Proficiency with one or more industry-standard PCB layout tools (e.g., Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, Mentor Xpedition, or equivalent)
Solid understanding of:
- Signal integrity and power integrity fundamentals
- Controlled impedance routing
- EMI/EMC mitigation techniques
Ability to work from detailed schematics and interface effectively with electrical designers
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with aerospace, defense, space, or other high-reliability electronics
- Familiarity with AS9100 or ISO 9001 design environments
- Experience supporting fabrication and assembly of rigid, rigid-flex, or HDI PCBs
- Exposure to advanced materials, back-drilling, microvias, and via-in-pad designs
- PCB materials and construction for high-speed signals
- Experience working with contract manufacturers and PCB fabricators
Desired Skills & Attributes
- Highly detail-oriented with strong documentation discipline
- Comfortable working in fast-paced, technically demanding environments
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to manage multiple layout tasks and priorities simultaneously
- Proactive mindset toward design quality and risk reduction
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience
- Equity participation through incentive stock options
- Health/medical, dental, vision, 401(k), PTO benefits
Flexible work from home options available.
Compensation: $90,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
About
Jemba9 is a space industry start-up founded in the spring of 2024. We are developing payloads and components in half-the-schedule at half-the-cost by adapting proven terrestrial designs to be space-worthy. This lowers NRE and risk, enables a prototype on day 1, and leverages established development and test ecosystems. Our adaptation flow utilizes proprietary engineering and analysis tools to:
- accelerate design adaptation from one domain to another (D->D*) and
- reduce the time and labor hours required to produce assurance artifacts.
With over 70 years of combined space design and production expertise and our on-shore electronics assembly operations, we are uniquely poised to be:
- The ideal partner to create value in the space market
- The ideal supplier for space systems developed with speed and assurance
Careers
At Jemba9, we are redefining the future of space by partnering with leading technology companies and transforming their innovations into space-worthy solutions. We “Spacify” advanced designs—adapting them for the extreme conditions of space, building product assurance artifacts, and controlling production and test to achieve true flight readiness. At the same time, we’re developing powerful tools to accelerate the entire engineering lifecycle, from concept through production. We’re looking for engineers who are passionate about building real spacecraft hardware and excited to contribute to innovative engineering tools—and, as a fast-growing startup, ready to roll up their sleeves and help wherever needed to make our mission successful.
