KENTECH Consulting Inc. is hiring experienced California-based Field Background Investigators to support pre-employment background investigations for public safety, security, and sworn personnel. This is a project-based, case-driven role with work assigned based on availability, experience, and case needs.

What You’ll Work On
Assignments may include investigations for:

  •  Sworn personnel (POST-compliant cases) 
  •  Public safety dispatchers 
  •  Security management and supervisory roles 
  •  Security officers (fast track cases) 
  •  Follow-up or discovery work tied to disqualifying or unforeseen findings 
Key Responsibilities
As a field investigator, your work may include:

  •  Conducting candidate interviews (in-person or remote, depending on case requirements) 
  •  Conducting reference interviews 
  •  Completing residence verification and neighborhood canvassing when required 
  •  Reviewing relevant records and documenting findings 
  •  Conducting social media and open-source research in compliance with applicable laws 
  •  Preparing timely, accurate field notes and documentation aligned with POST standards 
  •  Coordinating with internal project management and quality review teams to support final report submission 
Compensation

  •  Paid per completed investigation, not hourly, unless specifically approved in advance for a task. 
  •  POST-compliant investigations: up to $645 per case
  •  Some investigations may be shared between a field investigator and a report writer. Compensation may be split based on scope. 
Requirements

  • Active California Private Investigator license
  • POST Background Investigator certification (required for sworn cases) 
  •  Minimum five (5) years conducting pre-employment background investigations for law enforcement or public safety agencies 
  •  Strong knowledge of POST standards and Government Code 1031 and 1029
  •  Ability to conduct fieldwork within Los Angeles County when required 
  •  Strong written communication and disciplined documentation practices 
  •  Ability to manage multiple cases independently and meet deadlines 
  •  Comfortable working in a remote, case-based environment with required in-person fieldwork 
Work Location

  •  California-based 
  •  Fieldwork required within Los Angeles County, depending on case type 
  •  Remote work is available for portions of the assignment 
Independent Contractor Relationship (1099)
This is a 1099 independent contractor role. Investigators:

  •  Are paid per case or approved task-based work 
  •  May accept or decline assignments based on availability 
  •  Set their own schedules within case deadlines 
  •  May provide services to other clients
