Position: Early Head Start Teacher
Department: Head Start
Reports To: Head Start Center Director
Status: Non Exempt
Position Summary: Assist in the implementation of Curriculum/Adopted Program when planning and setting up classroom environment for children 0 to 3. Assist in the performance of screenings and assessments on all children according to a particular time frame and track individual child goals. Interact on a daily basis with parents and solicit volunteers for participation in the program as needed.
Essential Function / Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure safety in performing all job responsibilities and adhere to safety policy.
- Maintain clean/safe work area, classroom, gross motor and playground areas.
- Attend staff meeting and monthly Parent Meetings.
- Conduct home visits/parent conferences for the families in the classroom with Co-Teacher.
- Assist with daily activities.
- Assist with planning for the use and training of volunteers for the classroom, playground and field trips as needed.
- Ability to visually assess the health and behaviors of children.
- Assist Co Teacher in encouraging parents to give input into daily curriculum and document on lesson plans and to complete physical, dental and health screenings and follow-up in a timely manner.
- Implement child’s Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) and Individual Leaning Plan into classroom activities as planned with Co Teacher.
- Individualize activities to meet the needs of each child as planned with Co Teacher.
- Assist Co Teacher with scheduling and organizing time and materials to allow for educational home visits and parent/teacher conferences.
- Integrate activities from all content areas into the classroom as planned with Co Teacher.
- Complete children’s observations; keep necessary computerized reports/documentation weekly or as planned with Co Teacher or Center Director.
- Provide customer service in reception, greet and direct visitors at the site as needed.
- Review lesson plans submitted with Co Teacher for review by Center Director and Education Coordinator weekly.
- Follow step-by-step activities as outlined in content area plans and policies and procedures.
- Participate in professional development, sometimes off-site, at the request of Center Director.
- Must be responsible and able to handle confidential material.
- Communicate with parents about daily extended enrichment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Skills and Abilities Required:
- High school diploma or GED and current Child Development Associate Certification (CDA) are required for this position.
- One year of related experience.
- Maintain current, valid Texas driver’s license and liability insurance
- Able to obtain and keep current Adult and Pediatric CPR and First Aid certifications
- Good verbal and written skills
- Computer literacy, (Word processing, database and spreadsheets, Internet and e-mail)
- Preferred- Bachelor's degree in Childhood Development/Early Childhood Education or related field of study.
- Preferred – Bilingual
Physical Skills and Abilities Required:
- Lifting in excess of 25 lbs
- Able to kneel, stoop, bend, push, pull and sit on the floor to attend to children’s needs
- Ability to assess the health and behaviors of children by sight and sound
